Rimoung Biotech was founded by two long-time friends who came together with a shared vision: to bridge the gap in bioinformatics services for Sarawak and the greater Borneo region. The idea emerged during a research collaboration centered on Tasik Biru in Bau, Sarawak. While supporting microbiome studies of the lake, we discovered that even basic DNA sequencing required samples to be shipped to laboratories in Peninsular Malaysia.
The logistics were slow, costly, and unreliable. Sample loss during delivery was not uncommon. This sparked a question: why was there still no local provider capable of handling sequencing and bioinformatics work?
We began exploring the possibilities. What we found was that running a lean, high-impact biotechnology company was not only feasible — it was necessary. By observing how others operated in compact lab setups, combining open-source tools with efficient workflows, we saw a model that could work in Sarawak. And we decided to build it.
Our backgrounds in research and industry shaped our direction. One of us returned to biotechnology after years in chemical trading and data-driven business operations. The other brought years of research experience from international institutions, specializing in microbial processes and environmental bioinformatics. Together, we understood both the scientific depth and the practical realities of making a biotech venture succeed in a resource-conscious environment.
Rimoung Biotech was born out of a desire to start lean, stay focused, and scale responsibly. Our goal is not only to provide localized bioinformatics services, but also to build the foundation for something larger — a sustainable biotechnology ecosystem rooted in Sarawak. We aim to support applied research in bioremediation, biofuels, biomining, microbial-based industrial solutions, and eventually, advanced healthcare applications such as cell and gene therapy. All of these possibilities are powered by the insights DNA can provide.
We believe Sarawak has the potential to lead in biotechnology across Borneo. But it starts with infrastructure. It starts with access. And it starts with trust.
